Creating, Opening, and Saving Style Builder Files

Style Builder works with .style files. Here’s a quick look at how Style Builder enables you to work with these files:

  • Create and save a new .style file.
  • Open an existing .style file in order to edit sketchy edge strokes and save your changes.
  • Create a new style based on an existing one by opening the existing style file, saving the file under a new name, and editing the strokes.

Creating a new file

When you first launch Style Builder, a new file opens automatically, with a Sample Strokes library on the Settings tab.

If you have a .style file already open and want to create a new file, select File > New from the menu bar, and your new file opens in Style Builder.

Note: In Microsoft Windows, before your file opens, Style Builder may ask if you want to save changes to your existing file. In Mac OS X, you can keep multiple files open at once.

Opening an existing file

To open an existing .style file that you’ve created or that was included with SketchUp, follow these steps:

  1. Select File > Open from the menu bar. An Open dialog box appears.
  2. Navigate to the location where the .style file you want to open is saved.
  3. Select the file and click Open. Your file opens in Style Builder with a strokes library on the Strokes tab and the Sets pane populated with the file’s strokes.

Saving a file

To save changes to the current file, follow these steps:

  1. Select File > Save. By default, if your file contains blank strokes or your style doesn’t have a name, you see a warning dialog box. To continue saving your file, click the Save button (Microsoft Windows) or OK (Mac OS X).
  2. If you’ve already saved your file, then Style Builder saves your style as it appears in the Sets pane, and you’re done. If you haven’t saved your file yet, you see a Save As dialog box. See the next set of steps for details about navigating this dialog box.

To save a new file for the first time or to save changes to an existing file under a new filename, follow these steps, which reflect your current operating system:

  1. Select File > Save As. The Save As dialog box appears.
  2. Navigate to the location where you want to save the .style file.
  3. (Optional) In the File Name box, type a name for the file. By default, the file name matches the name you entered on the Settings tab.
  4. Click the Save button, and your file is saved in the location you selected in Step 2.

  3. (Optional) In the Save As box, type a name for your file. By default, the file name matches the name you entered on the Settings tab.
  4. Navigate to the location where you want to save the .style file.
  5. Click the Save button, and the file is saved to the location you selected in Step 4.
